The Truth is Better than Fiction Accuracy in Historical Fiction As any avid reader knows, waiting for the next novel in a favorite series to be published can be excruciating. It’s an understandable question and, while I’m sure it can get annoying (and some readers can be rude about it), it is generally intended as a complement. Readers are asking because they like your books and want to read more. Such questioning by fans raises other questions about what authors owe to their readers, if anything. I tend to be in the camp that says authors don’t owe readers anything in terms of when they will publish their next book, or how they will end a fiction series, and so forth. But this topic touches on another issue that is near and dear to meâ€"accuracy in historical fiction. I DO think that authors of historical fiction have an obligation to be accurate in their writing. Naturally, historical fiction is different from history books and I think only the very worst pedants would expect utter slavish adherence to historical facts in a work of fiction. Also, such adherence to fact would likely render a work of fiction…not fiction. Author Elizabeth Chadwick states, “it is not about dumping all that knowledge and research into the text. That’s the last thing you want to do. Your aim is to entertain readers with a riveting story, not bore their socks off” (Chadwick, 2017, para. 15). At some point, authors will have to make a judgment call and make some things up. No one is psychic and so we don’t really know what someone was thinking. In many cases, we might have chronicles or other documentation available from which authors can draw inferences and build a story. If we are very, very lucky, we might have a person’s own journals or even a recorded in terview, depending on the timeframe involved. But even these more personal types of evidence don’t allow us to hear a person’s innermost thoughts, or witness a private conversation. Authors have to invent dialogue based on what they have learned about a person from the evidence that is available to them. In short, sometimes they have to they have to guess how an historical figure might act. These kinds of guesses are to be expected in historical fiction. Saying up front that a book is a work of fiction gives an author creative license to write a lot of nonsenseâ€"or does it? Tudor historian John Guy expresses concern that readers of historical fiction are unable to tell the difference between fact and fiction, especially when it is well written (Brown, 2017). Guy states that it is even more troubling when students applying to the University of Cambridge, where he teaches, try to apply based on a desire to study an historical figure based on a characterization they read in a work of historical fiction. In a popular series about Thomas Cromwell, for example, Guy says, “it was more scary that the writing was so good that some people think it is true” (Brown, 2017, para. 19). This is where I get antsy about accuracy. Yay for excellent writing and storytelling! Boo for making people think it is accurate. Like it or not, authors have at least some modicum of power and authority and can influence what the public thinks. Many of their readers are going to take their words at face value and not look beyond that, nor do any research of their own to verify what they just read. The term revisionist history springs to mind. It behooves authors to want to spread accuracy as well as tell a good story. There is nothing at all wrong if a reader doesn’t care about the facts so long as the dresses are pretty and the knights’ armor is shiny. But, that shouldn’t mean the facts go out the window, either. Chadwick would seem to agree. She says, “Yes, story is massively important, but in the case of historical fiction the story must rest solidly on historical integrity…Indeed, it’s essential. If you are twisting history to suit the story then you’re not a good enough writer” (Chadwick, 2017, para. 21). In essence, a good story and historical authenticity are not mutually exclusive. You can work with facts, or around them as needed, but don’t make up your own facts. We have enough alternative facts floating around right now, thank you. “If you do your research and don’t warp the history while telling a bloody good story, then the historical detail anoraks will stay off your back, the people who just want the frocks and a story won’t notice, and everyone’s happy” (Chadwick, 2017, para. 21). In all honesty, history is generally interestingâ€"and dysfunctionalâ€"enough as it is without changing things for added drama, don’t you think? The Tudors, the ever-popular favorite of historical novelists, are well known for their glittering courts full of intrigue, betrayals, love affairs,  spies, and drama, yes? Well, the Plantagenets make the Tudors look like rank amateurs in terms of dysfunction. And, the years immediately prior to the start of the Plantagenet dynasty were so miserable that the chronicler of the Peterborough Chronicle wrote, “And men said openly that Christ and his saints slept.” I mean, really. Who needs to add drama to stuff like this? It’s already built in! Accuracy can take a heavy turn as well, depending on the topic, time period, or location involved. It’s especially important that authors take care that people who are already minorities, underrepresented, or oppressed in some way are not made more so through inaccurate writing. One Book Riot contributor told me that inaccuracies in historical fiction didn’t used to bother her too much until she realized how fictionalized stories tend to favor the majority classes, religion, and castes, especially in Indian context. “Nobody tells you the stories about the lesser privileged and their narratives get lost or overwritten in this way” (personal communication, 27 Feb 2018). Another really important factor that can get overlooked is the power dynamic between the oppressor and the oppressed. This can get lost or overwritten with incautious writing or shoddy research. As another Rioter commented, “I do think inaccuracy becomes more problematic in terms of softening the oppressor (e. g. Jewish woman who falls in love with Nazi, Slave who falls in love with Master, etc). This ignoring of the power dynamics is what really will get me to put a book down” (personal communication, 27 Feb 2018). How horrifying to think that history is being misrepresented, and people’s pain may be shunted to the side just for the sake of an inaccurate story. Tell a better story. The consensus among the Rioters who kindly volunteered opinions, as well as the opinions of reviewers at the Historical Novel Society, seems to be that if readers can do the research, so can authors, and that good research is preferred. Anachronisms are “profoundly annoying and did interrupt the spell that good fiction can weave between the author and the reader…Perhaps the biggest irritant for the HNS reviewers is writers giving their characters contemporary mindsets, in taking them out of the conventions, culture and behaviour of their times and giving them an ‘enlightened’ temperament” (Kemp, 2018, para. 9). It seems like such a little thing to include in any historical fiction book, will make the readers happy who like accuracy, and won’t matter to readers who are just there for a story. I promise never to bug you about when your next book will be out if you promise to give us well-researched historical fiction with an author’s note included. I have always gone to football games as a fan, never as an observer and I knew this experience would be different. I decided to attend this event because I enjoy football and I knew a few of the students from work that go the high school. It was also an opportunity to learn more about high school, I usually only watch NFL (National Football League) football games. The following are my observations from the fieldwork done during the football game. The setting for this game was a high school football game was Carolina Forest High School. The elements that would affect behavior included banners, posters and cheerleaders. This affected the home team in a positive way as they feel more support and motivation. It could negatively affect the away team as they feel intimidated and home team as they could feel more pressure to win. The attendees/fans were students, parents, cheerleaders, ROTC members, teachers and other dance team members. Most of the fans were white high school students between the ages of 14 to 17. I would say it was divided pretty evenly between males and females. They seemed upper middle class with a few that seemed to be upper class. The players were similar to the fans as they were high school students, 14 to 17 years old and middle class but there were a few more black players than white. The dress of the fans was typical of teenagers. Students mostly wore jeans, T-Shirts and flip flops. Many were shirts that had the schools logo and mascot on it. There was a group of young men with hair dyed black and wore similar skateboard type attire. The students seemed to stay in groups together as did the parents. There definitely seemed to be groups that stayed to themselves and did not socialize with anyone outside of their group. This behavior applied to parents and students. The students in these groups were of the same social class and did dress similarly. The atmosphere was very positive and happy at the football games. The home team won which helped with the atmosphere. There were a couple moments of tension when the home team had a penalty or was losing. I saw symbolism in the flags used by the high school’s NJROTC drill field team. Other symbolism I saw was used by the referees. They used hand gestures to convey the penalties being issued to either team. The other observation I noticed was the language used during the football game. Students used chants that were exclusive to their school to show their support. There was also verbiage used to describe which down and field position the game was being played at. There was also commentary from the announcers tell the audience which players were preforming which plays and their positions. From my field work I learned that energy of the game is in direct correlation of fans. Because many high school students don’t know the rules of football and go to games as a form of socialization only the energy isn’t as high. However there seemed to be less tension and conflict among the fans as a result of this. When emotions run high, there is a greater risk of conflict. This seems to happen a lot in football because of the loyalty fans feel for â€Å"their† team. I previously stated in week one’s assignment that functionalist perspective was most useful when looking at the sociology of football because it played a part in society has a purpose to fulfill as a whole. And I still believe holds true. It helps to bring people together, gives a sense of competition and a role model for children. It also helps fund the education of promising athletes and promotes good physical wellbeing. American football culture has a positive impact on society. College students that show promise are able to get a higher education on a full paid scholarship. This allows more potentially more successful people in society. People throughout the world love sports. Mankind loves to get together for a common interest and celebrate. Even in the face of war and other devastating losses, we as a society will feel hope and inspiration from the victory of our sports team. This is the reason why sociologists are so interested in researching sports. It is a strange and intriguing phenomenon. I think the reason the so many participate is the social status it gives you. Children look up to athletes as role models. There is also the factor of money as well. Fans will dedicate a lot of money and loyalty to their favorite players. I also think they enjoy the feeling of having people rely on their abilities and come from very far away to watch them play. Many just have a passion for the sport they play. Fans play large roles in society. One way they do this is by providing economy to metropolitan areas that have professional or college sports teams. They are also the reason why sports media has grown to be what it is now. If it weren’t for fans there would be need to have things, like instant replay that has helped the integrity of many sports. We wouldn’t have tailgate parties so more members of society can come together for a common interest. â€Å"The importance of sport varies with the individual. It plays little or no role in the lives of some people. For others, it is a light diversion from the cares of everyday life. I grew up watching the New York Giants because my father and our family favored that team. I think that if fans are cheering for a team and have good energy that this can affect a team in good and bad ways; good because the team will try to perform better and bad because they may not perform as well because they feel they don’t need to try as hard. Summary Response Paper Essay Media plays a big role in how our society is shaped today as most of the information that people get are from the things seen and heard from the news, television, music and other media forms. However, some of these bits of information we get from different forms of media have the potential of contributing harm to the society. Two essays discuss these adverse effects of media to our society. The essay â€Å"Calling the C-Word the C-Word† by James Poniewozik discusses how a State Department analyst treats the information reported in the news as something that would make United States more vulnerable to its attackers. Poniewozik criticizes how Dennis Pluchinsky reacts on US media’s way of reporting about terror vulnerabilities since the September 11 attack. He mentions in his essay that Pluchinsky believes that journalists endangers the country more by reporting certain vulnerabilities to terrorists or the mistakes these terrorists made in the past. However, Poniewozik thi nks of it differently in a way that these open sources and reports from journalists can actually help the country be a little less vulnerable to attacks. He argues that these pieces of information are also available to the government and should be a tool for them to act and implement security measures for the protection of everybody. The second essay, â€Å"The Issue Isn’t Sex, It’s Violence† by Caryl Rivers, discusses how music in this genre somehow have an effect to the increasing cases of violence against women. She states that there is nothing wrong with rock music today. She even thinks that most of them are funky, sexy and even witty. However, there are just really some songs that are just not so â€Å"friendly† to women. She even mentioned one theme of an AC/DC ballad that allegedly had inspired a Californian killer who was suspect to a series of murders in the state. Rivers argues that teenagers now believe what they hear in the radio and music channels. It can be a disturbing fact because of the worldy lyrics some of the rock songs have yet they are still being aired. Rivers dislikes the fact that people do not do anything with it. When it comes to the issue of violence against women, even when some rock song clearly implicates the topic in its lyrics, people just ignore it an d remain silent. She wants to put an end to the silence. Rivers suggests keeping the issue alive, making women speak against it, have disc jocks refuse playing of songs which have lyrics that are against women’s rights, and for men to also be involved in the issue. I, for one, believe in what these authors mentioned in their works. I somehow believe that giving out information about some vulnerability to terrorists can protect us in a way. Poniewozik supported his arguments by criticizing an article written by a State Department analyst, while Rivers, being a professor of a few lady students who were murdered, cited different examples of music lyrics that could be a cause of the issue she raised. Poniewozik’s work evolved more on his evaluation of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack which he connects to Pluchinsky’s (the analyst) analysis of the media. His tone is conversational, involving himself and his readers in his writing. I personally like his choice of words when describing things, such as â€Å"knee-jerk† and â€Å"scenario-spinning,† which are not so ordinary yet not highfaluting either. Caryl Rivers, on the other hand, wrote her article in a non-conventional manner having it in bulleted form. In her work, she shared her own thoughts about violence against women using the first person point of view. Hers is also a conversational one and can rela te to any type of reader because of her use of more common words. Her article cited examples of music to establish her stand on this type of media being one cause of violence against women. Both of them used words appropriate to the thoughts that they want to share and to their audience, not too aggressive or harsh, yet not too soft either. Their articles clearly show their stand on the issue that they are talking about. Poniewozik shared his thoughts about the media with his counter arguments of another person’s ideas, while Rivers did hers by basing her assumptions on alleged reports. Both made sense and I think no one is more credible than the other.

Some of these acts, The Sugar Act, The Tea Act, The Stamp Act, and The Townshed Acts levied taxes and forced the colonists to help support the British forces that were protecting America. The writers of the Declaration of Independence were outraged they used these newly passed acts to instigate a revolution. The British were trying to control an empire, fight wars, and dominate trade all at the same time. They needed money to do all of those things. They had extremely large armies ad navies that they had to maintain. They were also paying for or fighting the French and Indian War, or one of several other wars against Spain or France. They defended America in the French and Indian War, and they won. By implementing these new taxes the British were simply trying to get some of the money they spent on the colonies back. Is your LinkedIn Profile URL included on your resume? Read your Summary statement. Does it reflect your most current capabilities and achievements? If not, update it! Use specifics about yourself rather than overinflated â€Å"resume speak.† Add any skills / core competencies that you have added to your tool kit. Review the dates of all your employment positions and confirm that they are correct. List your most current position on your resume! (Perhaps you got a promotion that you haven’t gotten around to listing yet?) Include a result or impact in every bullet if at all possible. Companies care about what you achieved much more than they do about your job duties! Don’t ignore your duties and skills, but relate them to an achievement. A different view of HRM is associated with the Michigan Business School (Fombrun, Tichy and Devanna, 1984). There are many similarities with the Harvard map but the Michigan model has a harder, less humanistic edge, holding that employees are resources in the same way as any other business resource. People have to be managed in a similar manner to equipment and raw materials. They must be obtained as cheaply as possible, used sparingly, and developed and exploited as much as possible (www.hrmguide.co.uk). SOFT HRM: Storey (1989) cited in Price (2011) describes that Soft form of human resource management characterised by Harvard model. Soft HRM put pressures on the human aspects of HRM. It is giving more attention with communication and motivation in the organisation. This model distinguished that people should guide properly rather than managed. They are more involved in influential and realizing planning objectives in the organisation (www.hrmguide.co.uk). However, Soft HRM places an importance on human and is linked with the human relations school of Herzberg and McGregor (Storey, 1987 cited in Gill, 1999). Legge (1995) cited in Gill (1999) refers to this as Developmental Humanism. at the same time as emphasising the significance of integrating HR strategies with Business objectives, the soft model emphasises on taking care of employees as valued resources and a source of competitive benefit through their promise, flexibility and excellent skill and performance. Employees are positive rather than inactive inputs into dynamic processes, competent of development, worthy of confidence and teamwork which is accomplished through contribution (Legge, 1995, pp 66-67 cited in Gill, 1999). The soft version is seen as a method of releasing untapped reserves of human resourcefulness by increasing employee commitment, participation and involvement. Employee commitment is sought with the expectation that effectiveness will follow as second-order consequences. Walton (1985, p. 79) suggests that a model that assumes low employee commitment and that is designed to produce reliable if not outstanding performance simply cannot match the standards of excellence set by 5 world-class competitors and discusses the choice that managers have between a strategy based on imposing control and a strategy based on eliciting commitment (Gill, 1999). The soft model of HRM is based on viewing the individual as a human being utilising human talent and capability and generating commitment from employees (linked with the Human relations movement-see work of Maslow, Mayo, McGregor and Herzberg). Other features of the soft approach include: Generating a motivated, skilled and harmonious workforce. Generating commitment to the organisation and its goals objectives, Strategies and organisational culture Winning individuals hearts and minds Treating human being as humans and not a resource or commodity Generating two-way communication between management and the workforce to promote commitment and harmony. HRM PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT METHODS USED IN TESCO AND ASDA: Recruitment and selection process within ASDA. The recruitment processes within ASDA consist of 2 steps: Online application by which the applicant needs to fill in the information required in the application which may include some verbal, numerical and personality tests, which will enable the company gathering all the information that it need. And this will let ASDA decide whether the candidate is suitable or not. If the candidate succeed, the next step will depend on the role that the candidate applied for, the applicant will may be asked to attend interviews, or to a group assessment centre which the applicants will be asked to perform tasks designed to highlights the skills. Recruitment and selection process within Tesco The recruitment process of Tesco for example team members consist of two steps application. In comparing the two processes we can see that Tesco spend much more on recruiting and selecting than ASDA by using on job evaluation (OJE) system but despite it is taking more time, it is very effective as it shows and indicates if the candidate is the right person for the right job. STAFF TURNOVER: Marchington, M. Wilkinson, A (2007) in a study of CIPD (2004) finds that labour turnover rates vary considerably between industry sector and occupational group, at the same time as do the costs of recruitment. Most employers are more concern about collect statistics on labour turnover, but they also facing problem with lack of data or software issues (IRS Employment review 2004). Many employers also performs exit interviews, and both of these tasks are usually carried out by HR department where no involvement of line manager. The information is used to improve HR practices and policies such as communication, induction, learning and development and selection in an effort to reduce turnover (CIPD 2004b, p31). Wilkinson, A., (2007) argued that employers may come to a decision to use temporary employment agencies for recruiting staff so that they pass the problem to somewhere else. Glebbeek and Bax 2004 cited on Marchington, M. Wilkinson, A., 2007 point out that company should decide whether an optimum level of labour turnover with the mix of internal labour market and keep new recruits coming in, or whether the cost of turnover make most cases costly and unnecessary. According to Linda Maund (2001) some internal causes of an increasing labour turnover: The recruitment and selection procedure is not enough and imperfectly matches individuals to jobs. Employees are not well motivated and dont feel the organization from the core. S/he will consider better opportunities outside the organization and employee does not feel any interest to do better for the organization. Not equality in wages and salaries with competitors. THE EXIT PROCEDURES Tesco and ASDA both company paying attention of staff turnover percentages. They both are dedicated to find the way to reduce staff turnover in their company. Concerning Tesco and ASDA the exit procedures that this company follow is similar to other companies as it undertake an exit interview with the person who is leaving the job, so the staff will have the opportunity to give explanation their reasons for leaving the job, or in the case of the staff choosing another employer, or to air their grievance, all this helped Tesco to what it is now as those criticism helped the company to take decisions to change their policies, especially if this employee is leaving for a competitor. What Tesco and ASDA do is that despite the interview that make the manager listen to the staff and know the reason of leaving such as challenging work environment, salary, discrimination, promotion. If the employee is a good performer they try to keep him or she in the organization, as he or she is beneficial to the company and the organization doesnt want to loose of their staff because he may give more with the competitors and they can use the staff knowledge and what this staff has gained of knowledge against the previous company. And this is including the resignation of the staff. RETAIN EMPLOYEE: In the case of redundancy Tescos transfer staff to other superstores that are in need of workforce because as we know that Tesco in one of the fastest growing companies in the world, so in redundancy situation the company offers alternative job and all this is with discussion with the worker. The same thing applies to ASDA because this outplacement can keep this employees working and performing in the same level and improve confidence of the other employees and also it gives a good image about the two companies. However, Tesco and ASDA both companies are giving employee discount to motivate employee which is more effective to retain employees. By following those procedures the two companies can get better in the domain knowing if it comes to keeping good employees working for them, and those solution that were mentioned above are measured as the best and the commonly used by professional and leading organizations around the world. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT: One major area of the human resource functions of particular relevance to the effective use of human resource training and development. A number of academic people would argue against the significance of training as a main influence on the success of an organisation. Training works outside-in; education works inside-out. Therefore training is benefited for the organisation if they learn to be wise in how to use of an individuals capability and it helps to achieved business goals. Training has four main levels such as output training, task training, performance training and strategic training. However, these four main levels of need for any organisation for improve the skills.
